What Are The Advantages Of Minimally-Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery?
Laparoscopic Surgery has many advantages over conventional “open” procedures, many of which make it more optimal for the treatment of gynecological diseases.
Faster Recovery Times & Shorter Hospital Stays
Patients who undergo laparoscopic surgery can typically return to their normal daily routine in 7-10 days following their procedure, compared to the 3-5 weeks it may take to recover from the same procedure done as an Open surgery, barring any complications.
Patients are usually discharged from hospital the day of the surgery. In very rare cases, we may keep patients for up to 48 hours in hospital.
Less Pain Following The Procedure & Scarring
Pain following a laparoscopic procedure is reported to be considerably less than that of an open procedure. Patients are typically prescribed common analgesics to manage their pain (Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen/Paracetamol, or in some cases Enantyum). This is usually enough to ease patient’s discomfort so that they can return to their daily lives
Since the incisions required for a Laparoscopic procedure are less than a centimeter long, they are far less noticeable than larger incisions made in an open surgery. Smaller incisions lead to less visible scarring after recovery.
Lower Risk of Infection and Other Complications
The smaller incisions made during a laparoscopic procedure reduce the risk of infection as less of the patient is exposed than in an open surgery. Moreover, the use of more precise surgical instruments during the procedure also reduces the risk of operative and post-operative complications.

In a laparoscopic surgery, only 4 small incisions of 5-10mm are made in the abdomen, one of which is made in the belly button, compared to the larger incision of up to 10cm long made during a traditional “open” surgery.
How Does Laparoscopic Surgery Work?
First, general anesthesia is administered and the patient is unconscious for the entire duration of the procedure.
Second, a small incision is made near your belly button and a tiny camera is inserted. Then, carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdominal cavity in order to make space for the procedure to be conducted
After the abdomen is inflated, trocars are inserted through small incisions in the abdomen. Surgical instruments and a laparoscope (a tiny camera) are then inserted through these trocars.
With the laparoscope and surgical instruments in place, the doctor can see everything on a screen and complete your procedure. The surgery is conducted, with any diseased tissue or structures removed.
Following the conclusion of the procedure, the surgical instruments are all removed, and incisions are sutured up and bandaged, and the patient is moved into the recovery room. After a few hours in recovery, most patients can be discharged from the hospital.
