It is possible that certain women with cervical cancer can be mothers.

Here I present the case of Anna and Alfonso who were recently parents of the beautiful Sofía after we gave her a conservative treatment of fertility for her cervical cancer.

Almost 15% of women with cervical cancer have not yet been mothers at the time of diagnosis. Given that the recommended treatment is incompatible with any expectation of future pregnancy, the diagnosis generates an undeniable psychological impact on the patient/partner.
However, in very selected cases, it is possible to treat cancer in the cervix and preserve the patient’s expectation of reproduction. This type of treatment called “fertility preservation”, consists of removing the tumor with a margin of disease-free tissue by means of cervical conization. This maintains much of the cervix and the entire body of the uterus. Also, in certain cases, lymph nodes in the pelvis must be removed; although the latter, without relevance for the reproductive purpose.
Here I want to present the story of Anna who, at 27 years old, recently married and without children, came to my office with her husband more than a year ago. She had been diagnosed with cervical cancer and, obviously, beyond the fears about cancer itself, the big question was whether they were going to be able to be parents in the future or not. After several diagnostic tests and adequate advice, we proposed to remove the tumor in the form of cervical conization together with the removal of the lymph nodes through laparoscopic surgery.
This was done and, after analyzing the excised material, we concluded that no further treatment was necessary. Therefore, we proposed that together with the oncological follow-up of her already treated cancer, she could start the search for her already desired pregnancy just before her cancer diagnosis. Today, 14 months after their first consultation, Anna and Alfonso have just become parents of a beautiful Sofia.
Conservative treatment of gynecological cancer is currently possible. But for this, it is necessary to comply with very strict criteria for selecting patients together with adequate professional advice. The main conditions for offering this type of treatment are, logically, related to the type and extent of the disease. But certain aspects related to the patient herself must also be taken into account. For example, her age and her specific expectation of maternity in the short and medium-term, and the possibility that the patient adequately attends oncology follow-ups.
In short, it is possible for young women without children to be diagnosed with cervical cancer. But it is also possible that, after an adequate selection of patients, they can maintain their reproductive expectations and thus be mothers in the future. Therefore, welcome to the world Sofia!
