Gynecological & Pelvic Ultrasound
What Is A Gynecological Ultrasound?
Gynecological ultrasound is an imaging test that uses ultrasound to generate images. It is one of the most widely used diagnostic tests in gynecology and is used to examine and characterize the internal genital organs of women: the uterus with the endometrium together with the ovaries and tubes.
In addition, it serves to control the development and growth of a fetus during pregnancy. Generally, it is performed vaginally since the accuracy for the detection of pathologies that affect these organs is greater. In patients who have not had sexual intercourse, it can be performed abdominally or rectally.
Frequently asked questions about Gynecological Ultrasound.
Answers by Doctor Lucas Minig, Gynecologist and Specialist Oncologist.
How Is a Gynecological Ultrasound Done?
The patient is accommodated on the examination table in the same way as performing cervical cytology during the gynecological control. A probe, called a transducer, is inserted into the vagina, covered with a condom and water gel.
The transducer emits mechanical vibrations (ultrasound waves) to the organs, and these reflect the echo that is captured again by the probe and is processed by a computer that translates them into images.
It is for this reason that it is the most used study in pregnant women to control the development and growth of fetuses.
How Should I Prepare for a Gynecological Ultrasound?
To perform a vaginal ultrasound, the bladder must be empty. On the other hand, if an ultrasound is performed through the abdomen, the bladder must be full. In the latter case, the bladder acts as a window through which the uterus and ovaries can be seen.
Does a Gynecological Ultrasound Hurt?
The ultrasound examination is painless. Some patients may experience slight discomfort when performing the study due to the pressure that must sometimes be exerted with the vaginal probe.
What Can A Gynecological Ultrasound Detect?
Gynecological ultrasound detects cysts (masses whose content is liquid) and fluid in the abdominal cavity or tissues. The indications are very varied: from a simple annual follow-up to the diagnosis and follow-up of different pathologies, whether benign or malignant, such as:
Transvaginal ultrasound is often indicated when a better evaluation of structures in the pelvis is desired because it provides higher quality images and allows better visualization of organs from angles that cannot be obtained with the transabdominal transducer.
Can Gynecological Ultrasound Be Done During Menstruation?
Yes, there is no problem in performing a vaginal gynecological ultrasound during the woman’s menstrual period (gynecological ultrasound during her period), or if the woman has any type of genital bleeding.
