Mastitis During Menopause

Menopause is the cessation of menstruation and is characterized by decreased hormone levels. This decrease sometimes generates certain pathologies that, for the most part, are benign, such as mastitis

What Is Mastitis?

Mastitis is a benign disease of the breast that consists of inflammation of the breast due, in most cases, to bacterial infections. Although it usually occurs during lactation due to the obstruction of the breast milk duct, it can also arise due to the hormonal disorder caused by menopause. Therefore, it affects women in different periods of time.

What Are The Signs and Symptoms of Mastitis?

The infection caused in the breast is manifested through the swelling of the breast or its inflammation, as well as redness. Another symptom of mastitis is that the breast increases in temperature and as a consequence constant discomfort or pain is generated in the area of the breast tissue.

On the other hand, these symptoms are accompanied by others such as fever or headache, and can often be confused with a cold or flu due to general malaise.

During menopause, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate unpredictably, commonly causing breast pain or, in some cases, other benign conditions such as mastitis. In short, the chest is one of the big losers during this transition period.

Is Mastitis The Same As Cancer?

Mastitis is a disease that can be treated by antibiotics or, in the worst case, by surgical intervention. However, if the pain or inflammation does not subside after treatment, a specialist should be consulted to rule out other pathologies such as inflammatory breast cancer. To do this, numerous tests such as mammography, ultrasound or biopsy are performed.

Breast cancer is a very common disease among women. An infrequent typology is inflammatory cancer, which is often confused with mastitis despite manifesting itself with some other symptom other than benign pathology such as lumps or marks.

Tumor cells block the lymphatic vessels of the skin causing discomfort, swelling, redness, change in temperature and marks on the skin. In this case, the skin of the nipple may be affected. Both pathologies are presented as similar and are frequent after menopause, although the necessary tests should always be carried out to rule out cancer and thus initiate the appropriate treatment, whether it is mastitis infection or cancer.
