How to choose a good Gynecologist?

Gynecology is a 4-5 years long residency after finishing our education as doctors in Medical School. Gynecology is very broad and covers the follow-up and care of pregnant women (Obstetrics) as well as Gynecology with all its areas: fertility, oncology, cervical pathology (HPV), menopause, adolescence and endocrinology, among others.

The first thing to have in mind when choosing a Gynecologist in Valencia is the reason why he is needed. Therefore, needing a normal pregnancy control or a routine gynecologic follow-up is not the same as, on the other hand, having a specific problem such as gynecologic cancer, or infertility, to mention a few examples.
The opinion and reviews of other patients are very important. As in other fields, there is no better assessment than one from another person who has gone through the same situation. Here, I think it is important to pay attention, not only to the professional quality but also to the ability of the doctor to understand the problem and needs of each patient.
In other words, see if the professional is capable or not of being empathic and thus, successfully solve each disease. For the latter, time and the doctor’s ability to listen to the patient are needed.
I tell you it is rare that this has been taught to us in the different medical faculties around the world. Here, I think education, the level of responsibility, and our own perception with which we face the profession, play a role.
Professional education is another relevant issue to choose a good Gynecologist in Valencia; and for this, the reason for the consultation has to be considered. But when facing a health issue, always choose the best.
Education and training define, somehow, healthcare quality. This way, the diagnostic and therapeutic results significantly improve. It is common sense that the quality of laparoscopic surgery, for example, will not be the same if performed by a Gynecologist who is less trained for this procedure or who performs few interventions; when compared with one who has specific training in surgery and regularly performs surgical procedures.
Additionally, specialized training makes us see the patient with the specific disease from a better perspective. This way, professionals can not only have more diagnostic accuracy but also offer the most effective and convenient treatment for each patient from the whole spectrum of available therapeutic possibilities.
Another important aspect to choose the best Gynecologist in Valencia is his teaching and academic history. This is an ideal complement that gives an idea of the level of update in each specialty and the ability to transmit this knowledge to younger generations.
It requires plenty of time and effort, but it helps us keep up to date and interact with other colleagues in different national and international congresses, as well as with Medicine students.
In summary, I think that choosing a good Gynecologist depends on a number of factors. These come from the combination of the specific reason for the consultation and the level of professional and academic training of each specialist.
But also, and most importantly, the doctor has to be a good person, capable of empathizing with the patient’s problems and afflictions. In the end, a good doctor is, first and foremost, a good person.
